| What to Expect From Treatment |
To better manage your Hyperhidrosis, you should be thinking about these goals: |
- Reducing the amount you sweat so that it is not noticeable and doesn’t interfere with your daily activities
- Few, if any, side effects
- A cost that you can afford to maintain
- Compatibility with any underlying health conditions or medications you are currently taking
- Convenience
|
Whichever treatment you ultimately choose, please ensure that you discuss any other underlying health conditions or medications you are currently taking with your sweat specialist. This is important in determining if your treatment will be effective. |
- Botulinum toxin type A injections: interrupting the signal from the nerve to the sweat glands
- Topical antiperspirant treatments: applying aluminum chloride hexahydrate
- Oral medications: treating the underlying conditions
- Iontophoresis: applying low-intensity electric current to affected areas
- Surgery: severing the nerves that cause excess sweating

| Treatment Experience |
 |
| Actual treatment consists of multiple injections of the affected area or areas with a very fine needle. For treatment of the underarms most often anesthesia is not used, as the injections are virtually painless. |
 |
| Response to Treatment |
 |
| Axillary (Underarm) Treatment |
 |
| Within one to two weeks, your excessive sweating should be reduced to a normal level or less. In general terms, the amount of medication you were injected with will dictate the longevity of the treatment. Treatment response has been reported to persist for 4 to 7 months (average of 5.2 months) in patients (N=12) treated with 50 U per axilla. Repeat injections should be administered when effects from previous injections subside. Therefore, it will be your tolerance for the level of sweating you can live with before returning for an injection that will dictate the duration of your treatment. |

| Side Effects |
 |
| BOTOX® injections have few side effects, the most common being perceived increased sweating in other areas. Other side effects include pain at the site of injection. However, side effects are temporary. |
