Topical Treatments
Not all antiperspirants and topical treatments are created equal. Those containing aluminum chloride and alcohol are the most effective.

Topical treatments are sold under various names such as Drysol, Xerac or Hydrosalgel. Areas of treatment are usually palms, feet and the underarm area.

Effectiveness

Topical products vary in effectiveness depending on the concentration of aluminum chloride. There have been reports of approximately 50% reduction in sweating after application in mild sufferers. This option is appropriate for those with mild Hyperhidrosis. (Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale score of 1 or 2). For more information on the Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale click here.

Duration

Initially, the product is applied daily or less (2-3 times per week) so the duration of effect is short. However, over time there can be an increase in duration of effect after each application.

Cost

Regular antiperspirants cost around $5.00. Those with a higher strength can cost between $15 and $35. Some topical treatments are covered by some private drug plans.

Limitations

Extra-strength preparations can cause skin irritation and discomfort. Depending on the concentration of aluminum chloride, effectiveness may be limited in more moderate Hyperhidrosis.

A sweat management specialist can help you find your right treatment.

I’m not going back!”
