Botulinum toxin type A Injections –
Localized and convenient

Botulinum toxin type A (e.g. BOTOX®) injections consist of treating the affected area – using an ultra-fine needle – with localized injections. This option is appropriate for people who have focal hyperhidrosis in their underarms.

Since the treatment is virtually painless, the underarms, face and head, can be treated without anesthesia.

Effectiveness

In one study of 320 patients with axillary hyperhidrosis, 95% of BOTOX®–treated patients responded at week 1 and 82% at week 16.

The average reduction in sweat production in the BOTOX®–treated patients ranged from 83% at week 1 to 69% at week 16.

Duration

Treatment response with BOTOX® has been reported to persist for 4 to 7 months (average of 5.2 months) in patients (N=12) treated with 50 U per axilla. Repeat injections should be administered when effects from previous injections subside.

Cost

The cost of botulinum toxin type A injections varies depending on the area of treatment and the severity of your condition. You can expect to pay from $200 – $500 per treatment. If you’ve been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis, the treatment medication is often covered by most private drug plans and possibly by the government (QUE, MAN, AB, SK, NS). Your hyperhidrosis specialist will provide information to help you with reimbursement according to the policy of your insurance plan and will discuss any possible additional fees for the injection procedure.

Limitations

Side effects, if they occur, are temporary. There may be local mild pain or bruising from the injection, and a perceived increase in non-axillary sweating.

A sweat management specialist will help you find the right treatment.
